GUANGXI ZHUANG AUTONOMOUS REGION
The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is at the southern end of China
sharing its southwestern border with Vietnam.  It is one of five minority
autonomous regions in China.  The region has history dating from 770BC
and has had many names.  It obtained its current name in March 1958.
The weather is sub-tropical being very hot and humid during the summer
months through October.

Population of the region is estimated at around 45 million and is made up
of many ethnic minority groups of people.  The Zhuang people are of
course the majority but there are also the Tong, Yi, Yao, and Miao people.

Nanning is the largest city and also the capital of the region.  It is fast
becoming one of China's major cities with foreign trade steadily
increasing.  Nanning's current urban population is estimated around 1.75
million, however with the daily influx of migrant workers it is realistically
closer to 3 million on average per work day.  The reason for this influx is
because the rural areas of Guangxi are very poor with the average annual
net income around 1,895 yuan ($230.00 US).  Jobs in Nanning are few and
far between but if a rural Guangxi resident can land one it would improve
their lifestyle tremendously.

From the awesome silver beaches of Beihai in the south, to the magnificent karst mountains of
Guilin in the north, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is one of China's most beautiful
regions.  When you go to Nanning make sure you include some time in your itinerary to check out
other areas of the region.  Some are very close to Nanning such as the Yiling Cave area and Yanmei
old town.  It's well worth the time and believe me you'll be glad you did.
