Zhongshan Street and Zhuhai Street, considered the two oldest streets in
Beihai, were built around 1883. When Beihai became a commercial port
about 1876 many western companies from Britain, France, Germany, and
The Netherlands started businesses in this area and the architecture
reflects that with a combination of Chinese, European, and contemporary
buildings.

The Silver Beach, located at the southern edge of the city, extends for about 24 kilometers and
is famous for its fine white sand. Every year millions of tourists travel to Beihai just to see
and experience the beach.

Beihai Aquarium
Beihai Aquarium is located in the north of the urban district and together with Qingdao
Aquarium are listed as China 's biggest aquatic exhibition centers. With a building area of
1600 sq. meters, the aquarium has 7 showrooms and aquariums, green turtle pool and seal
pool. Over 670 kinds of marine creature specimens of Beibu Gulf are shown here with over
2800 exhibits. Among them, the rare animal dugong (mermaid) is the most visited. See the
skeleton of a whale which weighs over 5,000 kilograms, a huge lobster specimen weighing
several kilograms, the world-famous South Pearl, and a living turtle which is over a hundred
years old and weighs 100 kilograms. The aquarium also breeds many different kinds of
subtropical fish in the Beibu Gulf.

Shellfish and Coral Exhibition
The World Exhibition Center of Shellfish & Coral was the first, and now the largest live
shellfish and coral exhibition center within China. Located on South Sichuan Road there are
over a thousand kinds of shellfish and coral collections from around the world.
